Ice dams come from warm attics. Air sealing, insulation and ventilation fix the cause; ice and water shield protects the eaves.
Why they form
Heat escaping from the house warms the roof deck. Snow melts on the upper roof, runs down, and refreezes at the cold overhang. The ice ridge grows, and meltwater backs up behind it and works under the shingles.
Signs of an ice dam problem
- Thick ice along the eaves and long icicles
- Stains on ceilings near exterior walls in winter
- Water stains inside soffits
Fixing the cause
- Air seal attic openings around lights, vents and the hatch.
- Insulate the attic floor to keep heat in the house.
- Ventilate with soffit intake and ridge exhaust so the deck stays cold.
- Ice and water shield at the eaves when the roof is replaced.
Avoid chipping ice off the roof; it damages shingles. If water is coming in, a roofer can safely clear a channel.
Questions
Do heat cables help?
They can keep a path open in problem spots, but they do not fix the underlying heat loss.
Can ice dams damage gutters?
Yes. The weight of ice can pull gutters away from the fascia.
